Ultraman Florida

The timing worked out very well in that NRG athlete David Gething (from Hong Kong) was in Florida for Ultraman Florida at the end of our first week of camps. With much of the Ultraman course on the roads we train on it was great to be able to watch him race and give him some inside info!

Ultraman Florida is a 3 day event consisting of:

  • Day 1: 10km swim, 145km bike
  • Day 2: 270km Bike
  • Day 3: Double Marathon 84km

You can see David’s day by day details here:

And this is a quick analysis of his run:

You can see David’s run file from his double marathon by clicking below. This was great execution from David. We had set a plan to aim for 7hours or 5:00/km with the idea that it would feel easy to start but be a lot of work by the time he got to the end.

David started great as there were a lot of hills right in the beginning and he held about 5:10/km through here and feeling comfortable. He then got into his groove and was running steady 5min/km for the next 3+ hours, this includes having to stop at all lights (not that there where a lot). Just after the first marathon you start to hit a harder section of the course including the famous Orange Grove road that anyone who has trained in Clermont has run on. he hit this section at the 50km mark and kept a steady 5:10/km pace on the climbs of the dirt orange groove road. At about 74km he was averaging 5:05/km and this is when he started to really go for it, his last 10km he averaged sub 4:50/km and his last 2km he was running 4:20’s! Some incredible running at the end of 3 long days, but his great pacing and staying on top of his nutrition meant he had a kick for home at the end of a 23+hour race.

Congrats as well to Rob Gray (no relation!) who won the event, he put in a very solid 3 days and got the job done on the run in order to take out the win. It was quite the event to see first hand, congrats to everyone who took part
