Catharine Daly is a long time NRGPT athlete and 2 time Kona Qualifier, in 2014 she is turning 65 and to celebrate she is taking part in the Tour dâAfrique (riding from the top to the bottom of Africa!!) and working to raise money to help provide bikes to people in Africa:
Five years ago after I had done my first Ironman, a friend suggested that I do the Tour dâAfrique. The what? After researching it and meeting with several people who had done it in 2010, I decided that this was the way I wanted to celebrate my 65th birthday.
On January 10 Iâll be leaving from Khartoum, Sudan with about 55 other riders from around the world. We will average 120k per day riding through Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. The trip will end in Cape Town on May 10.
The hardest part for me will be pitching my tent every night after a long ride and only having baby wipes to clean up. The hotel every 5-6 days will be very welcomed.
The Tour dâAfrique is a Canadian company based in Toronto that has 12 years of experience. They have experienced staff who help us (nurses, cooks, mechanicsâ¦.) All we have to do is ride!!! 80% of the roads are good. It is the other 20% that worries me. I have taken several bike maintenance courses so feel relatively knowledgeable with regards to my cyclocross that I had built specifically for the tour.
Thanks to NRGPT, and especially Sylvie for helping me get ready for the challenge ahead!
Check out the TDA website at www.tourdafrique.com . Because we all have outstanding bicycles to do our triathlons, I felt I should raise enough money to buy one bicycle for every 1,000 k I ride. As the total ride is 12,000 k, I would like to contribute 12 bicycles to the Tour dâAfrique foundation. If you would like to help you can donate here. There is a comment section. If you add that it is for Catharine Dalyâs fundraising/NRG, Iâll be able to thank you personally.
Thanks
Catharine
